Hometown boy makes good

November 1, 2019

Native son Art Shamsky will be the guest at the  St. Louis Jewish Book Festival on November 6. The former Mets favorite — who turned 78 on Oct. 14 — will discuss his latest memoir, After the Miracle: The Lasting Brotherhood of the ’69 Mets, written with Erik Sherman. He will be interviewed on stage by St. Louis Post-Dispatch sports columnist Ben Hochman.

Here’s a shot from the book with Bud Harrelson, Jerry Koosman, Sherman, Shamsky, Ron Swoboda and Tom Seaver, along with a Bookshelf Conversation I did with Sherman about the project.

The festivities are part of the largest Jewish book fair in the world with 25 programs over two weeks, from Nov. 3-17.

I was fortunate enough to appear at the SLJBF twice. The first time was after the release of 501 Baseball Books Fans Must Read before They Die in 2013. More recently, I was a guest in 2017 for Hank Greenberg in 1938: Home Runs and Hatred in the Shadows of War. Both occasions were great fun, with first-class treatment by the events’ hosts and knowledgeable sports/book fans.
