Not dead yet

March 25, 2019

Several savvy readers contacted me to inform that there are a few other “Boys of Summer” left in addition to Sandy Koufax and Bob Aspromonte, as I wrote in tributes to Don Newcombe and Randy Jackson, both of whom passed away over the past few weeks.

These include

  • Carl Erskine, 92, another mainstay of the Brooklyn Dodgers pitching staff.

  • Joe Pignatano, 89, a back-up catcher and later coach for the World Champion New York Mets.

  • Fred Kipp, 87, a pitcher who got in just under the wire when he made his debut on Sept. 10, 1957, the Dodgers’ last season in Brooklyn.

  • Jim Gentile, 84, who actually made his Dodger debut on the same day as Kipp. His claim to fame was clubbing five grand slams for the Baltimore Orioles in 1961, setting an American League record that has since been surpassed.

Now you might say Kipp and Gentile are “BOS” on a technicality, but fair is fair. My apologies to those gentlemen for the omission and thanks to the gentleman who pointed that out.
