Lest We Forget: Randy Jackson

March 22, 2019

Last month, I posted about the passing of Don Newcombe, a mainstay of the Brooklyn Dodgers’ pitching staff. In the entry, I remarked that there were only a few left from the fabled “Boys of Summer.”

That number was reduced by one with the passing of Randy Jackson, who died Wednesday at the age of 93. Here’s his obit from The New York Times via Richard Goldstein. (By the way, Goldstein is the author of Superstars and Screwballs: 100 Years of Brooklyn Dodgers Baseball, published in 1991.)

Jackson has the distinction of being the last member of the Bums to hit a home run. It was a three-run job on Sept. 28, 1957, against the Phillies in Philadelphia.

So according to my calculations that leaves just two alumni: Sandy Koufax, 83, and Bob Aspromonte, 80, who struck out in his debut (and only) at bat for Brooklyn as an 18-year-old and didn’t return to the majors until 1960.
