The Bookshelf Conversation: Kostya Kennedy, Part Deux

November 26, 2018

Let’s see if I remember how to do this…

One of the joys I derive from this blog is the opportunity to speak to authors, artists, filmmakers, musicians, etc. about a common interest. When I was working at the paper, I had more time and resources to do these conversations. Now it’s more a catch-as-catch-can thing.

So I was thrilled when Kostya Kennedy made some time available to discuss his latest project, The Story of Baseball: In 100 Photographs

SI launched in 1954, so obviously there are a lot of images that were not generated by the magazine. Points to the “selection committee” for not relying solely on their own inventory.

And, as you can see by the book cover, these are not always the most feel-good stories so more points for not just being Pollyannish in extolling the virtues of the national pastime, as many books are wont to do.,

Kennedy has given baseball fans some wonderful books already, including 56: Joe DiMaggio and the Last Magic Number in Sports and Pete Rose: An American Dilemma. I spoke with him about the latter when it first came out; you can listen to that conversation here.
