Baseball Card Day! Hooray!

August 11, 2018

Did you have it on your calendar? August 11 is National Baseball Card Day.

MLB.com posted this story yesterday in advance of the occasion, listing the coolest card for each year since Topps launched in 1951. No spoiler alerts here, but if you want to jump to the specific decade…

And these are deemed the best of all time, but I guess everyone has their own favorite.

Of course, there have been many books on the subject. My favorite is The Great American Baseball Card Flipping, Trading and Bubble Gum Book by Fred Harris and Berndan Boyd. I even had the opportunity to talk with Harris for this Bookshelf Conversation.

I also spoke with Dave Jamieson following the publication Mint Condition: How Baseball Cards Became an American Obsession.

And this one with Josh Wilker, author of the charmingly nostalgic Cardboard Gods.

I would love to see a revised edition of Topps Baseball Cards: Complete Picture Collection, 40-Year History, 1951-1990, an oversize book featuring pictures of each card front (I have the previous version which ends with the 1985 set).

Other books on the topic include:

Note that there are numerous books devoted to cards from specific eras and teams as well as other round-ups of “top ###” cards, not to mention the scores of price guides. Enjoy.
