So this is the way it’s going to be, I guess. The stars and favorites from my youth are of an age where their passing is not uncommon and therefore should not be shocking. But it is shocking and serves as an unwelcome reminder that my contemporaries are getting older, too.
Rusty Staub is the latest to join this club. “Le Grand Orange” — as he was dubbed as a member of the Montreal Expos — died today at the age of 73. Here’s his obituary from The New York Times, as per Richard Goldstein.
Staub enjoyed a 23-year career, beginning as a 19-year-old with the expansion Houston Colt .45s in 1962. In addition to the Expos, he played for the Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers, and had two yours of duty with the New York Mets. After years as a productive starter — Staub was a six-time All-Star — he became a pinch hitter par excellence.
He was the subject of an English-language bio by John Robertson (Rusty Staub of the Expos).
