Larry Gerlach, author of The Men in Blue: Conversations with Umpires
recently made news when he decided to give his baseball book collection to Colorado Mesa University earlier this month. According to the article from the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, some 1,400 books were involved.
It’s not a contest — I’m sure some of you out there have more than I — but 1,400 books barely comprise what I have in the attic, let alone the rest of the house.
I’m not as old as Gerlach (75), but like him, I want to take care of this rather than leave it to the family to deal with. But unlike Gerlach, who is also a former professor at the school, I could not find any interested parties to take my collection off my hands for love or money. Forget money, I didn’t want anything except clearing the space. I’ve had a couple of takers but that barely skimmed the surface. I’ve even tried sneaking them over to the library and slipping them in the night deliverly box when no one is around. It’s getting to the point where I’m just going to leave them on the street. A sad end to old friends.
