Since I posted the first of these on a Thursday, which is known on social media as a time of reflection, I thought to make it a regular thing under this rubric.
As a reminder,
I highly recommend Pocket as a way to hold onto links you come that you want to keep. Unlike bookmarks, Pocket keeps the entire page and makes it relative easy for you to find stuff you “pocketed.” I have keepers going back six years — more than 5,000 links — and I’ve decided it’s time to start cleaning house so here are some submitted for your amusement, perusal, and education. Some are not current, but in a sense, they’re timeless. They’re presented in reverse order (oldest first).
So here goes…
- While looking for a feature I’d written for Foreword Magazine, which no longer seems to be on their website, I did come across a list of regular baseball book reviews I had done for the publication over the years. Note that it includes another reviewer’s take on my own 501 Baseball
title.
- As much as I say I don’t get poetry, I recently submitted a poem to Bardball and sure enough, in my “pocket” was another I had submitted a few years back.
- In case you were wondering how to say “baseball” in foreign languages…
- After an absence of more than a year, the LitBases blog seems to be back. It describes itself as “The Premier Blog of Baseball Literature and Writing.” I guess you’ll have to be the judge of that.
- From time to time I’ll submit an essay to the Huffington Post. So far, I’ve opined on “The Legacy of Ball Four,” Derek Jeter cheating (or not); and Jeter and the Yankees in contract negotiations in 2010.
- Speaking of Ball Four, there were several appreciations published when it hit the 40th anniversary of its release. Here’s one from Jay Jaffe via Pinstripe Alley. And one I did for Bookreporter.com which found its way to Bleacher Report, although I can’t recall how.
- Well, these guys never showed up and I ended up recycling all of those copies of Baseball Weekly. I recently came across some pages I still have from the NY Daily News when the Mets won the Series in 1969. They’re all yellowed and crumble to the touch. Sad, kind of like Rod Taylor finding books way in the future in The Time Machine (skip to about the 2:40 mark).
- There has been some consternation over the pitching motion of Marlins reliever Carter Capps. But what if this guy was pitching? Hey, as long as you start on the rubber…
- Scott Decker posted this entry on the last game played by the Montreal Expos. Still sad about that. There’s talk of a new Montreal team, but who knows when or if. The planets have to be perfectly alined.
The Classical was supposed to be one of those repositories for long-form sports essays. Seems to have lost its way. But here’s a reminder of when they were “young” and full of piss ‘n vinegar.
