Review roundup, May 28

May 28, 2013

So much for the free access of information. You can read the opening of the Boston Globe‘s review of Allen Barra’s Mickey and Willie: Mantle and Mays, the Parallel Lives of Baseball’s Golden Age. Fortunately, there are other sources that are a bit moe “generous,” including the Chicago Tribune, Kirkus, Publishers Weekly, and New York Journal of Books (not to be confused with New York Review of Books, which rarely considers sports titles).

The Richmond Times-Dispatch published this syndicated review (from the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram) on Robert Weintraub’s The Victory Season: The End of World War II and the Birth of Baseball’s Golden Age.

The San Francisco Chronicle published this piece on Giants pitcher Jeremy Affeldt’s new book, To Stir a Movement: Life, Justice, and Major League Baseball. The main points I’ve seen in other brief mentions of the book seem to highlight the fact that Affeldt used to be homophobic, but no longer is. That and the fact that he returned a check to the team because it was $500,000 more than had been intended. Like they wouldn’t have found that out? Here’s more from Publishers Weekly. Affeldt is a self-proclaimed Christian, so I image this will get a lot of play in that demographic media.
