First Moneyball, now this?

June 8, 2012

If you thought it was a stretch to make a feature film out of Michael Lewis’ non-fiction baseball classic Moneyball, what say you about Buzz Bissinger’s Three Nights in August, which considers a 2003 series between the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs?

According to this piece on variety.com, Billy Bob Thornton will play the role of Cards’ pitching coach Dave Duncan, with Ed Burns subbing for catcher Mike Matheny. The report says the film will be a “fictionalized” version of the book.

Thornton reprised the role of Morris Buttermaker inthe 2005 remake of Bad New Bears (Walter Landau Matthau (thanks to those eagle-eyed readers who pointed this out) in the original) and played the starring role in the movie version of Bissinger’s Friday Night Lights. One hopes he will do a better job than Philip Seymour Hoffman’s portrayal of Oakland as skipper Art Howe.
