Light my Fire: Has the Kindle taken me to the Dark Side?

Just received a Kindle Fire for Hanukka (Thanks, sweetie!). While it’s great fun (I can play Soduko to my heart’s content and not worry about killing trees), there are a few issues I have to resolve.

Like any new toy, the first inclination is to play with it endlessly, seeing what it can do, all the cool stuff you can put on it, buying accessories, etc. Problem is, I rarely buy books these days; the majority comes in the form of review copies and I visit my local library at least once a week. I can’t see myself having both print and e-book for the same titles.Maybe I’ll treat myself once in awhile as well as I look to fill some holes in my collection,  as well as seeing what else is out there on the Internet.

What I can see helping is buying fewer periodicals in their paper form. After all, the majority of readers chuck ’em after reading (not me; I’m a hoarder for the ones i do buy). Getting them in e-form can also be a bit cheaper, although some —  like Sports Illustrated — require a print subscription in order to access their apps (correct me if I’m wrong).

The Fire can definitely be a time-suck. There are lots of books, stories, and articles that would never see the light of day in a print format, but e-books are a cheap way to reach an audience. Many are free or a couple of bucks, so sampling is relatively inexpensive financially, but not in terms of time spent.

Still, I’m greatly enjoying playing with Fire (heh).  But can someone explain Angry Birds to me?

Ron,
I’ve had a Kindle for almost 2 years and I’ve only purchased 2 books for it. There are so many websites available to get all the classics for free….who has the time to spend the money. I just finished Huck Finn, and Crime And Punishment.
I can now download books from my local library as well.
I can’t help you with the Angry Birds….maybe you could try feeding them some bread crumbs!!!!

Ron, I recently got a Kindle Fire as well. No doubt you have found that it has all the basic applications useful in the social media space, such as Twitter, Facebook, etc.

Here are some apps that I would recommend
tunein — an aggreagation site for radio stations, by type.
Pulse – a news aggregations site similar to FlipBoard for the iPad.

Thanks, Mark. I have pulse, bu I’ll give Tune in a try.
