Speaking of Rothstein

November 30, 2011

My wife and I encountered two baseball references while watching a couple of our favorite shows on Sunday — Homeland and Boardwark Empire.

Homeland is the story of Nicholas Brody, a U.S. Marine held captive for eight years in Afghanistan who may or may not have been turned into a sleeper agent by Al Qaeda. In this week’s episode, we see Brody, in flashback, freed from his captivity to teach English to the young son of the head terrorist. So what does the kid learn? Take me out to the Ball Game.” Can you get any more American than that?

The other national pastime nod comes from BE which features Arnold Rothstein as a recurring character.  This week includes a shot of  Rothstein (looking much trimmer than the character portrayed in the feature film Eight Men Out), holding a newspaper which bears a front page story about the impending Black Sox trial.

There was also this scene, which leads off a longer clip about the episode as a whole. Please not the title of this particular program.
