Musial turned 91 yesterday.
I kind of feel badly for him. Although he’s surely one of the all-time greats, the contemporary fans rarely hears his name mentioned in the same breath as a Willie Mays or a Mickey Mantle, even though Musial’s stats are comparable, if not better.
Books on Musial include:
- Stan Musial: Baseball’s Perfect Knight
, by St. Louis Post Dispatch, 2010
- Stan the Man: The Life and Times of Stan Musial
, by Stewart, 2010
- Musial: From Stash to Stan the Man (Missouri Biography Series)
, by Giglio, 2001
- Stan Musial: A Biography (Baseball’s All-Time Greatest Hitters)
, by Stanton, 2007
- Stan Musial: A Biography (Baseball’s All-Time Greatest Hitters)
, 1964
- Stan the Man Musial: Born to Be a Ballplayer
, by Lansche 1994
- Stan Musial: baseball’s durable “man.”
, by Robinson, 1963
- Stan Musial: An American Life
, by Vecsey, 2011
Here’s a re-rentry, feature Vecsey discussing his book on National Pastime Radio last month as the Cardinals were wining the World Series..

I believe it was also the birthday of Ken Griffey Jr, also born in Donora PA, as was his father, at least according to Baseball Reference. That’s a heckuva outfield for a small town team.
Also according to BR, Musial is number one all-time on the Hall of Fame Monitor, which measures how likely (not how deserving) a player is to make the Hall. His all around excellence, plus his longevity, put him ahead of Ruth, Williams, Cobb, Wagner, Mays, Bonds, Mantle, Aaron and anyone else you might think more likely to be in the top spot.
