I’m embarrassed to admit it now, but there was once a time in my life when I indulged in… professional wrestling.
One of the most popular of these “athletes” at the time was a guy know as “Macho Man” Randy Savage, a semi-bad guy, who had a very pretty “valet” who would accompany him to the ring, distracting his opponents (although never deliberately, like some supporting cast members) who would “menace,” further incurring the wrath of the Macho Man who would defend her honor by beating said opponent to a pulp.
Savage, born Randall Mario Poffo, died this morning in a car accident in Florida. He was 58.
According to Wikipedia, Poffo — whose brother, “Leapin’ Lanny” Poffo, was also a pro wrestler — “was a minor league baseball outfielder in the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox farm systems. He injured his natural (right) throwing shoulder at one point so he learned to throw with his left arm instead. The team was managed by Jimmy Piersall. Randy’s last season was 1974, when he played for the Tampa Tarpons.”
Savage parodied himself and his industry in the 2002 feature film, Spiderman and appeared in other movies and TV shows.
