A middling relief pitcher for the Braves and a couple of other teams in the 1970s, Tom House‘s biggest claim to fame was catching Hank Aaron’s 715th home run in the bullpen. Talk about being in the right place at the right time.
Since then he’s earned a reputation (not to mention a PhD) as a student of the pitching game and has published several books on the subject, including
- The Art & Science of Pitching
- The Winning Pitcher: Baseball’s Top Pitchers Demonstrate What It Takes to Be an Ace
Baseball Statistics Books)
- Fastball Fitness: The Art and Science of Training to Throw With Real Velocity
- Fit to Pitch
- Arm Action, Arm Path, and the Perfect Pitch: Building a Million-Dollar Arm
I don’t usually read instructionals, but it seems like these are an awful lot of titles on the same subject. Wouldn’t you think he could have combined the material into one big book?
House also wrote The Jock’s Itch: The Fast-Track Private World of the Professional Ballplayer in 1989. Let’s just say Jim Bouton has nothing to worry about.
