With the NCAA taking flight, the March 21 issue of Sports Illustrated offers just one baseball item: Joe Posnanski on the plight of the (his beloved) KC Royals.
Now last week, that was a different story, and my apologizes for not reporting in a timely manner.
Joe DiMaggio graces the cover, to mark the 70th anniversary of his famous 56-game hitting streak. Kostya Kennedy, author of a new DiMaggio bio, offers this piece. It may be an excerpt or a fresh article; there’s no indication I can find to ID it.

In the March 21 issue of ESPN The Magazine Tim Keown, who worked with Josh Hamilton on his autobio, offers a commentary, “So you think Barry Bonds is a bad guy? That just might be his best defense.” Other items this “style”-themed issue include:
- a price list for all the protective equipment you might want to wear to the plate (total cost: $435 for helmet, batting gloves, cup, sliding shorts, etc.)
- How Brooks Conrad, the Braves second baseman, will (or won’t) recover from his playoff errors
- A look at Indians’ manager Many Acta’s tweets. (Really?)
- C.J. Wilson and other athletes channeling their male model personna
- How Tommy Hilfiger might redesign the Yankees’, and other sports, uniforms. (In a word, “yech.”)
- An interesting deconstruction of the popularity of certain team’s caps
- And a general piece on sports couture over the years.
