John Thorn, who today was named as Major League Baseball’s official historian, will be one of several authors presenting at the March 5 meeting of SABR’s Casey Stengel Chapter.
The day-long event — which is open to the public — will be held at the Mid-Manhattan Branch of the NY Public Library (Fifth Avenue and East. 40th Street, sixth floor), from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Thorn, who has just released his latest title, Baseball in the Garden of Eden: The Secret History of the Early Game, was recently awarded SABR’s highest honor, the Bob Davids Award, named for SABR’s founder. Thorn was the senior creative consultant for the Ken Burns documentary Baseball and in 2004 he discovered documentation that traced the origins of baseball in America to 1791 in Pittsfield, Mass.
Other writers scheduled to appear at the March 5 event include
- Kostya Kennedy, a Sports Illustrated senior editor and author of 56: Joe DiMaggio and the Last Magic Number in Sports
, which marks the 70th anniversary of one of the game’s most iconic accomplishments.
- Kate Buford, author of the SABR Lawrence Ritter Award-nominated Native American Son: The Life and Sporting Legend of Jim Thorpe
.
- Film historian Rob Edelman, author of Great Baseball Films: From Right Off the Bat to a League of Their Own
and Baseball on the Web
, who will discuss the Brooklyn Dodgers and the media.
- Dennis Corcoran, author of Induction Day at Cooperstown: A History of the Baseball Hall of Fame Ceremony
, who will discuss the Hall and its election process.
- Doug Gladstone, author of A Bitter Cup of Coffee: How MLB and the Players Association Threw 874 Retirees a Curve
.
The program also features a trivia contest and raffle prizes.
Admission is $25, which can be paid in advance or at the door. For information, e-mail David H. Lippman at dhlippman@juno.com.
