This is the time of year when you can expect to see a glut of articles and reviews on authors and new titles and old favorites. So here’s the first from the Christian Science Monitor.
The lineup (because there are nine titles, get it?) incldues:
- The Natural
, by Bernard Malamud
- Bang the Drum Slowly (Second Edition)
, by Mark Harris
- If I Never Get Back: A Novel
, by Darryl Brock
- Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game
, by Michael Lewis
- Ball Four
, by Jim Bouton
- The Last Hero: A Life of Henry Aaron
, by Howard Bryant
- Eight Men Out: The Black Sox and the 1919 World Series
, by Eliot Asinof
- Crazy ’08: How a Cast of Cranks, Rogues, Boneheads, and Magnates Created the Greatest Year in Baseball History
, by Cait Murphy
- The Last Boy: Mickey Mantle and the End of America’s Childhood
, by Jane Leavy
The writer — Randy Dotinga (Mr.? Ms.?) — makes a point that s/he enlisted “the help of two professional sportswriters (both women, for a fresh perspective).” Susan Fornoff, a current freelancer formerly with The Sacramento Bee, offers the first three suggestion; Rachel Bachman of The Oregonian contributes titles 4-6; and Dotinga finishes up with the last three.
Is it just me, or does “a fresh perspective” sound a bit condescending? Men don’t have fresh perspectives? Besides none of the titles seem especially mold-breaking from the usual list of favorites. Just sayin’.
