Behind the Times

February 1, 2011

Not sure what’s going on at the “paper of record” lately. Maybe it’s staff cuts.

But here are two stories that appeared recently on the pages of the newspaper that appeared elsewhere some time ago.

Gil Meche turned down the last year of a $12 million contract because he knew he wouldn’t be able to perform. The Times featured Tyler Kepner’s story on the front page of the Jan. 27 issue. But Joe Posnanski had already written the piece for Sports Illustrated more than a week earlier. Granted this originally might have been more a issue of Posnanski, since he’s a KC Royals follower, but still, why did it take so long before the Times considered it not only print-worthy, but cover-worthy?

Today the publication features a piece in the sports section about the School Sisters of Notre Dame and their ownership of one of those rare Honus Wagner T-206 cards. It’s a sweet story about selling the card and charity, yada yada yada, but the card sold at auction for more than $200,000 (the finale sale prices seems to vary) last month.

Now if Gil Meche had bought it, that would have been a story for the Times…sooner or later.
