Because you can keep a page-a-day calendar on your bookshelf…
Sports Illustrated columnist Joe Posnanski riffs his 2011 SI Calendar as a way of introducing some baseball history. As 2011 marks the 70th (!) anniversary of Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak, Posnanski also notes the publication of Kostya Kennedy’s upcoming 56: Joe DiMaggio and the Last Magic Number in Sports. And the fact that he calls the book — an SI publication — excellent? Coincidence, since he does make fun of the calendar to an extent. ”
The Jan. 7 fact was this:
“Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox — known as the greatest hitter who ever lived — ended his famous 1941 season with a .406 batting average.”
Ted Williams? In early January? And this “fact” seems kind of opinionated, doesn’t it?
A personal aside: when I was a kid growing up in Brooklyn, about 10 or so, we went to a deli for dinner. I was restless and wandering around the front of the store and noticed a small item on the counter that turned out to be a Mets page-a-day calendar promotion. I thought it was a coupon dispenser and kept tearing off page after page. Ooops.
True story.
