Haven’t done one of these in awhile, so here goes.
- MLB.com posted this story about Andrew Zimablist, who published Circling the Bases: Essays on the Challenges and Prospects of the Sports Industry
last October.
- WithLeather blogs about Jose Canseco’s upcoming (and unpromising?) appearance on he new season of Celebrity Apprentice.
- Speaking of television, will baseball get its “ready for their close-up” moment with HBO’s Hard Knocks? Although important issues about young mens’ futures are at stake, I doubt it would have the same impact as going deep inside football teams, if for nothing else the vicarious violence the gridiron game has to offer.
Last year, baseball readers enjoyed bios on some of the major stars of the game, including Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron, and Willie Mays. what these legends have in common is that there have been many books written over the years. Although there isn’t the same level of “output” in 2011, one of the grander projects is a 528-page bio of Hall of Fame catcher Roy Campanella, by Neil Lanctot due out in March.
