January 6, 2011

to forget to post about Hank Greenberg‘s 100th birthday, which would have been Jan. 1.

Andy Wolf posted this tribute on Dec. 30.

Mark Kurlansky, author of The Eastern Stars, is about to release  anew biography —  Hank Greenberg: The Hero Who Didn’t Want to be One — from Yale University Press in March.

Previous media include Hank Greenberg: The Story of My Life, written by the ballplayer with Ira Berkow, and Hammerin’ Hank: The Life of Hank Greenberg, a book for younger readers by Yona Zeldis McDonough. There’s also Aviva Kempner’s wonderful 2005 documentary, The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg.

Hammerin’ Hank is also a prominent subject in the new documentary, Jews and Baseball: An American Love Story.
