Catching up after the holidays, we have:
- Bill Freehan turns 65 today. The backbone of the Detroit Tigers, Freehan published Behind the Mask; an Inside Baseball Diary in 1970.
- Minnie Minoso, aka The Cuban Comet, turns 85. He published Extra Innings: My Life in Baseball in 1983 and followed it up 11 years later with Just Call Me Minnie: My Six Decades in Baseball.
- Joe DiMaggio was born Nov. 25, 1914. Needless to say there have been dozens of good books about him through the years. A few of my favorites include Richard Ben Cramer’s Joe DiMaggio: The Hero’s Life, Michael Seidel’s Streak: Joe DiMaggio and the Summer of ’41, Christopher Lehmann-Haupt’s sweet paean, Me and DiMaggio, and the scrapbook-ish The Dimaggio Albums.
