A belated Happy Birthday to Stan Musial, who turned 90 yesterday.
George Vecsey, who is working on a biography of the Hall of Fame outfielder who spent his entire 22-year career with the St. Louis Cardinals, offered his own greetings in his NY Times column yesterday. (My favorite Musial stat: 1,815 hits at home, 1,815 hits on the road.)
As Vecsey notes, Musial did not garner the same attention as two flashier contemporaries, Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams, but his quiet dignity makes him quite compelling at this stage of his life. He was recently designated to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Musial will be honored with his fellow recipients at a ceremony in January. I wonder if he’ll play his harmonica?
The St. Louis Post Dispatch offered this tribute to their beloved icon.
Vecsey’s book is set for an May release from ESPN. Previous Musial titles include:
