Hats off to Mr. Brosnan, who penned the first of the “in-season” adult autobios/memoirs with The Long Season in 1960. Like Jim Bouton, whose Ball Four
was released in 1970, Brosnan was considered something of a turncoat for “revealing” the secrets of the locker room. And this was without all the sex and foul language!
Brosnan, who turns 81 today, followed up on The Long Season with Pennant Race, published in 1962. He has written other sports titles since then, but he’ll always be remembered for being the “first.”
Some nice pieces on Brosnan:
- Pitcher Jim Brosnan, Throwing a Perfect Game (Washington Post, 2004)
- An Interview with Jim Brosnan (LA Observed, 2007)
- The Baseball Reliquary inducted Brosnan into its Shrine of The Eternals in 2007.
