Happy birthday to Johnny Pesky, inventor of Fenway Park’s Pesky Pole, 91 years young today. Pesky was the author or subject of several books about the Red Sox, including
- Diary of a Red Sox Season
- Mr. Red Sox: The Johnny Pesky Story
, by Bill Nowlin
- Few and Chosen: Defining Red Sox Greatness Across the Eras
Pesky was also one of the subjects in David Halberstam’s excellent book, The Teammates: A Portrait of Friendship.
Also celebrating a birthday: Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt, who turns 61.
- Mike Schmidt: The Phillies’ Legendary Slugger
- Clearing the Bases: Juiced Players, Monster Salaries, Sham Records, and a Hall of Famer’s Search for the Soul of Baseball
. Several years ago, a bunch of baseball personalities (players, managers, broadcasters, etc.) came out with their considered opinions on how to fix a broken game. This was Schmidt’s attempt.
