It was 50 years ago today

June 17, 2010

Yesterday, actually (close enough for jazz), that Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho changed how the movie industry dealt with sex and violence, for better or worse. There are several interesting analyses, including David Thomson’s The Moment of Psycho: How Alfred Hitchcock Taught America to Love Murder, which I’m reading at the moment, as well as this from WNYC’s Studio 360.

I bring the anniversary up as a brilliant cross-pop culture segue to former player and current broadcaster and author Steve “Psycho” Lyons.

Taking advantage of his reputation as a flake, Lyons published Steve Lyons : PSYCHOanalysis (with a forward by Stephen King!) in 2001, and The Psycho 100: Baseball’s Most Outrageous Moments in 2009. Like any book that seeks to rank its entries, The Psycho 100 is fodder for great debate. After I read the book last year, I listed each item as Lyons ranked it, adding my commentary. One of these days I’ll find it and post it here.
