Literary Birthday greetings: The Shuffler and Super Joe” Charboneau

Happy birthday to Shufflin’ Phil Douglas, born this date in 1890. Douglas, who was expelled from baseball for “gambling issue,” pitched for nine years, primarily for the Cubs and Giants and was the subject of the 1978 bio One Last Round for the Shuffler, by Tom Clark.

Also celebrating, “Super Joe” Charboneau, 55, one of those one-year wonders who won Rookie of the Year for the Indians in 1980 and was gone from the Majors after 1982. Many Cleveland fans point to his as a prime example of the shortcomings of the franchise and their long-term failure to produce a winner (the curse of Rocky Colavito?) In addition to a somewhat premature autobio (below), he lent his name to Russell Schneider’s 2006 compilation of Indian profiles, What Ever Happened to “Super Joe?”
