* Because you can stick a Fathead, Jr. on the side of your bookcase

April 20, 2010

As longs as it touches, it fits.

When I was a kid, the big thing were 3′ x 6′ posters. They came in a tube and were a real bear to flatten out enough to tape to your wall (this was in the cro-magnon days before poster tack and double-stick tape were invented).

These were mostly mail-order affairs, advertised in the pages of such publications as Street and Smith, Sports Quarterly (boy, I miss those guys), and other baseball publications. Now the price seems cheap, but for a kid who got fifty-cents a week in allowance, that was a hefty sum.

It would have been cool to have Fatheads back in the day. The regular editions are virtually life-size; the “junior” models are still pretty big, measuring more than 2-1/2 feet in height. The manufacturer claims they stick on the wall without damage and are easily movable.

Admittedly the selection is not huge at this point. Players include Derek Jeter, Chase Utley, Albert Pujols, Grady Sizemore, Ryan Braun, Kevin Youkilis, Dustin Pedroia, Tim Lincecum, Mark Teixeira, David Wright,Alfonso Soriano, and Evan Longoria. There are also team logo and calendars products for a number of teams. Some items are currently out of stock, but check the site from time to time to see what new products are available.

Readers of the Bookshelf can get discounts on their oder, including a 15% off coupon code for select Fathead products (plug in product code SML15C) and free shipping (SMLSHP1). In addition, Fathead is giving away one free Fathead Jr. every day for the month of April.

(Full disclosure: The Fathead company has graciously offered me one of their junior products as a sample. I feel just like a radio DJ.)
