I’ve always been curious about the timing of a book’s release. For example, one title getting a fair bit of buzz this year is The Baseball Codes: Beanballs, Sign Stealing, and Bench-Clearing Brawls: The Unwritten Rules of America’s Pastime, by Jason Turbow with Michael Duca.
I have this on my “to-read” pile (think Jenga), but I wonder how different it can be from Ross Bernstein’s 2008 The Code: Baseball’s Unwritten Rules and Its Ignore-at-Your-Own-Risk Code of Conduct.

Here are some reviews for the new book:
- From the Wichita Eagle
- NPR.org
- Geekweek
- The Huffington Post
- Northwest Herald (McHenry County, IL)
- Durham (NC) Herald Sun
P.S. 9:30 p.m. I just read the intro to Turbow’s book. Care to guess what he leads off with? The Ryan-Ventura fight, as depicted on the cover of Bernstein’s book.

Ron, I thought the exact same thing when I saw that book. “Didn’t this book just come out?” I guess that’s why it’s nowhere near the top of my reading list. Too many other interesting titles that aren’t repeats.

Ron,
I appreciate your coverage of the Baseball Codes. When you finally slip it from the Jenga pile, I hope it meets with your satisfaction. You posit an interesting question about how my book differs from The Code. Once you get through it, I'm eager to hear what you think.
