This week (March 15) in Sports Illustrated

March 18, 2010

Actually, I suppose this is last week’s news, but since there are several baseball items worth noting, here goes:

  • An item about Sen. Jim Bunning, who displays the same bulldog tenacity on Capitol Hill as he did the pitching hill.
  • A profile on Orioles catcher Mark Wieters by Tom Verducci and a sidebar on the historic place (or not) by catchers in the draft.
  • Even though it’s not exclusively baseball, this article could apply.

And a “They Said It” from Bob Feller:

Ninety-one-year-old Hall of Fame righthander, on rookie Reds lefty Aroldis Chapman (left), who defected from Cuba and signed a $30.25 million contract: “He must’ve got Obama stimulus money. Wake me when he wins his first 100 games.”

I know I should be too hard on players from Feller’s generation, especially those who served in the War as he did and lost so much time and income, but I must admit I’m getting a little tired at his lack of grace when talking about modern players. Unless it’s just those comments that the media chooses to tell us.
