* Tampa Story

November 16, 2009

(Based on the famous movie named after another Florida city.)

Just got out of dinner. Reggie Jackson gave a very sweet speech about Yankee tradition and how the players at Yankees Fantasy Camp exemplify those virtues. The managers of my team — the Bombers — are Roy White and Jesse Barfield. Other players in attendance include Ron Blomberg, Al Downing, Homer Bush, Mickey Rivers, Chris Chambliss, Oscar Gamble, Fritz Peterson, Tommy John, and Phil Linz (I hope I didn’t omit anyone).

So far, they seem like a nice bunch of fellows, easy-going and eager to share a story or a laugh. A lot of the campers here have cards, photos, balls, and bats to sign. As much as I collect books, I never got into the memorabilia collecting aspect. But that’s neither here nor there.

Anyway, the action gets started tomorrow at seven as we travel to George M. Steinbrenner Field. I have the honor of being assigned to Derek Jeter’s locker.

Frustrated in that I can’t seem to get into my other blog, but I’m working on it.
