The Ventura County Star posted this review on Curt Smith’s new Vin Scully biography.
Upshot:
Some people say “God is in the details.” Others say “the devil is in the details.” With Smith’s writing both are present. Those of us who look forward to poring over every facet of Scully’s life won’t be disappointed; Smith leaves little out. But Smith’s flowery style of writing can be excruciating and at times almost hieroglyphical…
…Dodgers fans who know every bit of trivia about the team will find mistakes, too (and quite frankly, it’s almost impossible to find a sports book these days without several errors in it), but for the most part, the fabric of the book is rich in color and texture. None of the book’s faults take away from Smith’s — or your — appreciation of his subject.
Those of us who have craved for a Vin Scully biography now at least have something to hold onto, authorized or not.
My, but those Californians are protective of their legends, aren’t they?
