With the recent success of the Colorado Rockies, baseball in Colorado has gained a new level of interest and popularity. Yet, unbeknownst to many, baseball statewide achieved a high level of competitiveness as far back as the 1920s, at least at minor league levels.
But it is a coincidence that “From Sugar Beet Fields to Fields of Dreams” is currently on display at the Greeley History Museum. Filled with mostly black and white photographs, old uniforms and equipment, the exhibit chronicling baseball in Northern Colorado….
Gabe Lopez …began the project — as a book he hopes to have published this spring — to honor his father, Augustine Lopez, who played 29 years [in semi-pro ball]. “He was a real strong hitter. He was the bambino, the Babe Ruth of the Mexican League.”
