Trying to clean up a lot of backlog here:
***
From the Brooklyn-based Jewish Press, this review of Dana Brands’ Mets Fan.
***
Charles C. Alexander, author of biographies on Ty Cobb, John McGraw, and Rogers Hornsby, as well as a treatise on baseball during the Depression, recently released his studious account on Tris Speaker.
***
Between the Covers Rare Books of Merchantville, NJ hosts a fascinating Web site (right) that’s simply fun to use. I’ve done some of the legwork here by already doing a search for “baseball.” Pricey, but it doesn’t cost anything to browse.
***
From the Orlando Sentinel, a review of The Best American Sports Writing 2007.
***
From ESPN.com, Rob Neyer’s choices for an “Essential Baseball Library.”
***
From the Issues in Publishing Blog, a metaphorical essay on why “Book Publishing is like Major League Baseball.”
***
Speaking of rarities: from Key Man Collectibles, a baseball memorabilia Web site, this article on “Classic Baseball Paperbacks of the ’40s and ’50s.”
***
The Sports Illustrated Web site posted this slide show of Ballet in the Dirt: The Golden Age of Baseball, a collection of photographs by Neil Leifer. Published by Taschen as a limited edition, it weighs in at an MSRP of $400, more than $1/page (302 pages). I’m guessing I won’t be receiving that as a review copy.
