Moment’s over?

February 16, 2016

There’s a scene in the excellent baseball film Bull Durham in which Nuke LaLoosh, the prodigy pitcher, played by Tim Robbins, exults as he comes into the dugout after a strong inning of work. As he does so, his catcher, veteran baseball lifer Crash Davis, played by Kevin Costner, chews him out for all the little faults.

“Can’t you even let me have the moment,” LaLoosh asks?

“Moment’s over,” replies the surly receiver.

That was my thought when I saw the piece in The New York Times titled “Ah, Spring! What Could Go Wrong?”

Lots of things, primarily in the form of injuries or inexplicable struggles on the mound or at the plate (few people care about defensive problems unless they’re really major).

The link filename carries this “title”: “why-your-baseball-team-wont-make-the-playoffs.”

The teams haven’t even officially reported let. This is one of the most anticipated times for sports fans, signalling the end of the cold dark days of winter. So my question to the editors at the Times is, can’t you just let me enjoy the moment?
