Baseball books, the next wave.

July 20, 2015

There are basically three time periods during which baseball books are released: around opening day (the largest number), around the All-Star break, and once more around World Series time.

There’s only so much space at bookstores and new material comes in all the time. Case in point: a friend expressed interest in purchasing two copies of my new book about the Maccabiah Games and asked if they were available Watchung Booksellers, the town’s bookstore. I had reached out to to see if they had an interest in holding an author event as they did when 501 came out in 2013; I gave up after two e-mails went unanswered. So I went there the next day and when I didn’t see it in the new arrivals section, asked one of the clerks. In fact, they had two copies, but they were in such an odd spot I don’t know how anyone over four-feet would have been able to see them.

I told the clerk about my friend’s desire to buy the two copies and suggested they might want to order some more, since I expected others would also be interested. I have not been back since to see if additional books had arrived. Maybe they thought I was just BS-ing.

But I digress. This entry was actually about a piece from CSNBaltimore.com about “Five baseball books for fun summer reading.” The article includes The Grind by Barry Svrluga, Billy Martin, Baseball’s Flawed Genius by Bill Pennington, The Best Team Money Can Buy by Molly Knight, Pedro by Pedro Martinez and Michael Silverman, and Split Season 1981 by Jeff Katz. The Knight and Svrluga titles were released after the beginning of July, the others coming out in April and May. As such, they might not even be on the shelves anymore.
