Here’s looking at you, kid — Update

https://i1.wp.com/sports.mearsonlineauctions.com/ItemImages/000052/52895a_lg.jpeg?resize=216%2C176Charles M. Conlon, the famous baseball photographer (he might have shot other subjects, too, but I only know him from baseball), produced some wonderful close-up portraits, a number of which are included in a couple of collections: Baseball’s Golden Age: The Photographs of Charles M. Conlon and The Big Show: Charles M. Conlon’s Golden Age Baseball Photographs. In some cases, he returned to the same player, several years apart, to record the toll time had taken. Very moving stuff.

I was reminded of Conlon’s then-and-now theme by this slideshow on ESPN.com by Tabitha Storen, revisiting some of the Oakland As players from the Moneyball era. Not all of them ever made it to the show, but that’s part of the bittersweet saga, isn’t it?

UPDATE: Here’s a slide-show of some of Conlon’s iconic images, as featured on The Sporting News site. HT to former TSN staffer James Meier for the link.
