Judging a book by its cover

August 15, 2014

I would probably not be reading this 2003 release anyway, so the cover wouldn’t be a make-or-break issue. But with all due respect to the publisher, designer, and author, this is a strange deal.

Local Author: Eagleswood man writes baseball tale

Composition: Is this a photograph or an illustration? It certainly looks “layered,” like the body is superimposed on the background, at least to this untrained eye.

Awkward pose: That’s a funky delivery the pitcher is exhibiting. It’s not an action shot in which a player gets caught in an awkward pose/moment, like some of these guys. For a project like this you can take your time and get it just right.

Equipment: At least the “pitcher” is wearing spikes, not sneakers. I can’t find a larger version, but that almost looks like a first baseman’s mitt.

Field: Where the hell is this guy? Because it looks like a plot of earth in the middle of a green nowhere. Where are the other fielders? Where are the stands? The fans?

Just sayin’.
