The former embattled Major League pitcher passed away yesterday at the age of 57.

Welch wrote about his addiction issues in Five O’Clock Comes Early with George Vecsey. Originally published in 1981 with the subtitle “A Young Man’s Battle with Alcoholism,” it was re-released a decade later with “A Cy Young Award-Winner Recounts His Greatest Victory,” following his 27-6 season with the Oakland As that merited him the honors.

Overall, Welch — a two-time All Star —  had some pretty good numbers: in 17 seasons, he won 211 games and lost 146 for a winning percentage of .591 with an ERA of 3.47. Since 1990, no one has matched his single-season win total.

Perhaps one of his greatest on-field moments:

Here’s his obituary from the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Daily News and Oakland Tribune.
