Maybe if the team played better?

August 26, 2013

John Royal of the Houston Post recently asked in a column, “Why Aren’t There Any Books About the Astros?” He complains that there are lots of books about the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, etc. Yeah, well maybe if the Astros had the long history and tradion that those  teams have enjoyed, it would be different.

Aside from that, I’m not sure exactly what he considers a “good” book — I’m guessing he’s ruling out titles written for younger readers, but there have been several volumes concerning the team including Jerry Izenberg’s Greatest Game Ever Played, about the 1986 playoff between the Mets and Astros. There’s also  A Six-Gun Salute: An Illustrated History of the Houston Colt .45s, by Robert Reed and Astros Heroes: Remembering the Houston Astros Who Helped Make the 1960s Baseball’s Real Golden Age,” by Carroll Conklin, which just came out in June.

A simple search on Amazon will return numerous titles, but, again, I don’t know what he considers a worthy contribution.
