Review roundup, June 5

June 5, 2013

bbiconThe Huntington News (WV) published this review about Acre, a baseball “fable.” Upshot: “I’m not going to give away the plot points, other than to say to know Acre is to love him.”

bbiconThe Minneapolis Star Tribune posted this about Allen Barra’s Willie and Mickey.

bbiconThe Charlotte Post and Courier ran this review of Larry Colton’s Southern League. One thing I’ve never considered is the regional review, that is how the media in a specific area might handle their critique. For example, might the perception from the (relative) locale in which a book is set differ from someplace with no connection? Would a newspaper in a Southern city like Charlotte handle a book that deals with Jim Crow laws with a different sensitivity than say, a more “liberal” northern outlet?

bbiconWhat the heck, might as well add my own review of Southern League, which appeared recently on Bookreporter.com.

bbiconHere’s another take from the Oregonian. And the Willamette Week, also based in Oregon, also had a POV. Southern League was also included in a threesome of books in the Biloxi Sun Herald, along with Class A-Baseball in the Middle of Nowhere by Lucas Mann and American Pastimes: The Very Best of Red Smith, edited by Daniel Okrent.

bbiconEat Your Way Smart (!) posted this review of Chad Harbach’s The Art of Fielding. The writer adds a list of some other favorite baseball books.
