We’re all Jackie Robinson

April 15, 2013

There’s a line in the new biopic, 42, in which Pee Wee Reese tells his new teammate Jackie Robinson, the first African-American to break the (modern) color line, “Maybe tomorrow we’ll all wear 42. That way they won’t tell us apart.”

That tomorrow is today.

Today Major League Baseball holds its annual Jackie Robinson Day. While most teams honor a beloved star by retiring his number, MLB decreed that, aside from players currently wearing 42 at the time of the decision, no one would ever wear that number (the NY Yankees’ Mariano Rivera is the only active player still wearing 42 on a daily basis).

But for one day each year, every Major Leaguer is Jackie Robinson.
