Baseball Book Clubs: ‘Hot Corner’ does Frantic Frank Lane

March 20, 2013

Frantic-frank-lane-baseballs-ultimate-wheeler-dealer_mediumBaseball Nation’s Hot Corner Book Club’s latest consideration is Bob Vanderberg’s new biography of Baseball’s Ultimate Wheeler Dealer (according to the subtitle.

While blogger Rob Neyer starts out hopefully — “it’s real good so far.” — he concludes his entry on a quizzical note when he writes “It doesn’t look like the whole book’s going to be so lively, but it does have life. Which is too often in short supply in these sorts of affairs.”

I wonder what he means by “these sorts of affairs.” To be honest, the publisher, McFarland puts out a lot of biographies of people that not otherwise not be “immortalized.” While that’s a nice nod to the players and other personnel involved in the game, the quality is a mixed bag, although most tend toward the inclusion of too many factoids, if you know what I mean. The authors generally do a marvelous and yeoman-like job of research, but whether or not including every detail is necessary is another story.
