Flipping through the dial

July 6, 2012

“Dial”: the means by which previous generations selected their TV and/or radio programs. Precedes “remote control” and buttons.

For your viewing pleasure, now and in the future:

* You have to wonder whether teams may regret allowing TV entities to shadow them for a season. It’s almost like the Sports Illustrated cover curse. This time, it’s the Miami Marlins, who must have thought it would be great for publicity, what with their new ballpark and all. But being featured on The Franchise hasn’t seemed to work out so well, according to this piece on Grantland. Last year the San Francisco Giants were the focus of the series, based on their World Series win in 2010. In 2011, they finished second in the NL West and out of the post-season. So far, the Marlins — despite the addition of player such as Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle, and Carlos Zambrano — are 40-42, fourth in the NL East and their attendance, despite their brand-spanking new amusement park, is 1,246,504, 12th of the 16 NL teams.

* Not to be outdone on the premium cable front, HBO announced it has renewed Eastbound and Down for a fourth season. This falls into the “too painful to watch” category for me, along the lines of The Office. There’s something about watching characters who are clueless about their own obliqueness and other negative qualities that just makes me cringe.

* A new documentary about the history of the San Diego Padres before they became a Major League franchise.
