Bits and Pieces, March 30

March 30, 2012

Baseball Reflections posted this review of High Fives, Pennant Drives, and Fernandomania: A Fan’s History of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Glory Years (1977-1981), by Paul Haddad.

Just in time for Opening Day in Japan (which just passed. Sorry for the late post): baseball terms in Japanese!

Another late post: GQ ran this profile on broadcasting legend Vin Scully last October.

Andrew Zimbalist, who knows a thing or two about baseball economics (May the Best Team Win: Baseball Economics and Public Policy, Baseball And Billions: A Probing Look Inside The Big Business Of Our National Pastime, etc.) thinks the recent Dodgers sale is kinda dumb.

Speaking of the Dodgers: “The Penguin” one cut a musical record? You don’t Cey, write Tom Hoffarth. By the way, I’m looking forward to his annual 30-books-in-3o-days feature, which should begin on Sunday.

The Right of the Bat blog posted this article about the connection between baseball and jazz. It’s often been written that the two are a couple of items that originated in America, and for which the rest of the world should be grateful. You’re welcome.

Doug Glanville (The Game from Where I Stand: A Ballplayer’s Inside View) published this piece on the high cost (financially) of youth sports in Time magazine.

Hardball Times posted this review of Dirk Hayhurt’s latest memoir, Out of My League. I understand that Hayhurst will be playing in Europe this season. I’m willing to bet cash money that there will be another book out of this.
