Baseball Reliquary program honors Bill Veeck

March 20, 2012 · 2 comments

The always-entertaining, education, and interesting Baseball Reliquary will host  “Bill Veeck: Baseball’s Greatest Maverick,” an exhibition at the Arcadia Public Library, Arcadia, California, from April 9 and through May 24.

The exhibition is based on Paul Dickson’s book, Bill Veeck: Baseball’s Greatest Maverick, the first major biography on this American original, which is due out next month. The book is filled with anecdotes and some heretofore unknown biographical information about Veeck, the four-time major-league team owner who brought much-needed change to both the business and conscience of baseball.

The exhibition will culminate on Saturday, May 19, with “VeeckFest,” a celebration of the life and times of Bill Veeck, including a film screening, book signing, and panel discussion  from 1-5 p.m., and will be highlighted by an appearance by Dickson, who will be in Los Angeles for a week to promote his new book.

Coincidentally, the exhibition also marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of Bill Veeck’s autobiography, Veeck–As In Wreck: The Autobiography of Bill Veeck (written with Ed Linn). The book is widely considered to be one of the most insightful works ever written on baseball. (Veeck was the author of two other books with Linn: The Hustler’s Handbook (1965), a series of caustic essays on various aspects of baseball, and Thirty Tons a Day: The Rough-Riding Education of a Neophyte Racetrack Operator (1972), a memoir of his days as president of the Suffolk Downs race track.

An exhibit like this needs to have a permanent home in Chicago, where Mr. Veeck has his name listed in the phone book.

Absolutely. Someone should get on the White Sox/Indians/Cubs/Orioles (predecessor of the browns) to put some sort of display honoring him in their stadiums.
