I don’t know what’s more disappointing…

Visited by local Barnes and Noble, hoping to pick up some more baseball annual magazines. I already have a couple, but was expecting more to have arrived since I purchased them several weeks ago.

I’ve been meaning to mention this for awhile. Marketing research has shown that items displayed at eye level sell better than those above or below. Makes sense; people are lazy and the easier you make it for them, the more they’re apt to do what you want, such as buy your product. Companies pay premiums for the best shelf space/display.

That’s why I’m so disappointed to see that in my B&N, which is in a fairly middle-to-upper middle class area, the magazines that are displayed so prominently have to do with weapons. What does that say about our society when the bookstores, supposedly a bastion for the intellectual, highlights guns and ammo and bows and arrows about more peaceful pastimes?

The lower shelves house more publications than I believe (IMHO) are warranted/necessary about international sports, such as soccer. Aside from two titles which I already have, the handful of baseball mags seem to be geared to the fantasy enthusiast.

What’s worse: there are more magazines about the NFL Draft than non-fantasy baseball titles. The MLB season gets under way March 28-29 with the Seattle Mariners facing the Oakland Athletics in Tokyo(!).  Back in the USA, the St. Louis Cardinals visit the Miami Marlins on Wednesday, April 4. Opening Day is Thursday, April 5. By contrast, the first round of the NFL Draft is April 26.

Phooey.

April 4 is a Wednesday. I had to go check the schedules, because you had me worried that I’d screwed up my calendar for Rangers Opening Day.

And yeah, Opening Day is on a Thursday for a lot of teams. How weird is that?
