We didn’t stop the documentary: Billy Joel and The Last Play at Shea

November 13, 2011

Sung to the tune of “We didn’t Start the Fire,” by Bill Joel:

New York Mets are shutting down,
their old ballpark; won’t be found.
What’s a proper way to say, “thanks for all that?”

Why not host a concert, eh?,
Get a mega-star to play.
Google You-Tube videos: “Mets-Cubs” and “black cat.”

Looking for a place to play?
Try one right next door to Shea.
Citi Field was going up before the final out was made.
Mets were just about to flop,
what disappointing drop.
Missing the NLDS,
what a shocker, what a mess.

Chorus: We didn’t stop the filming.
Couldn’t choose the topic, never thought of logic.
We didn’t stop the filming,
just kept adding on, used another song.

How to give a fond goodbye?
Scratching heads. I don’t know why
we can’t just get Billy Joel to play a few tunes.
Mix it in with Mets’ highlights, get the viewers in our sights. He can play in summertime, the month after June.
Tell them all ’bout Billy Joel, how he fell into a hole: making music, contract woes, (drugs and alcohol, you know).
Through it all the star maintains
New York street cred and he gains,
Cristy Brinkley as a wife,
still and all he goes through strife.

Chorus: We didn’t stop the filming.
Couldn’t choose the topic, never thought of logic.
We didn’t stop the filming,
just kept adding on, used another song.

Is it sports? Is it song?
Can’t decide, is that so wrong?
Stick in everything we’ve got; don’t want to waste a single shot.
Back and forth with everything
from the film vault, let us bring
Beatles, Stones, and Willie Joe, just as long as we make dough.

Is the film about the Mets? Is it Billy Joel who gets
upper billing? I don’t care, long as we get it on air.
Once on cable it will screen
constantly. It will be seen
twenty-seven times a day.
English? Spanish? Both okay.

Chorus: We didn’t stop the filming.
Couldn’t choose the topic, never thought of logic.
We didn’t stop the filming,
just kept adding on, used another song.

Stick in city politics. Robert Moses (what a kick): Master planner picked a site in Flushing, Queens. “Hey, that ain’t right!”
said the Dodgers, “Uh-uh, no.” They decided they would go out to Cal-i-for-ni-ay, with the Giants (they were tight).
Left New York without a team
in the NL (very mean).
Bronx’s Yankees, not the same;
the A.L. plays a different game.

Chorus: We didn’t stop the filming.
Couldn’t choose the topic, never thought of logic.
We didn’t stop the filming,
just kept adding on, used another song.

Back to Billy, I’m confused. Pick the baseball or the mus-
ic; we need to focus here. Barkeep, bring another beer.
Billy Joel’s a local fave and will be until the grave.
No one better to perform at old Shea as Mets’ fans mourn.
Just when all seems done we’ll bring
Paul McCartney on the scene
Very stirring, very nice,
(factor in to purchase price).
Whisk him in from London trip
(police escort would sure be slick).
We’re full circle from the day:
Beatles history at Shea.

We didn’t stop the filming, we could not decide how to end this ride.
We didn’t stop the filming, though the ballpark’s gone, we could still go on and on and on…

repeat ad naseum
