I’m not going to dwell on this much more. This being the day of the release, the dailies have issued their critiques.
- The New York Times made it one of their “Critics Picks.” (Here’s a sneak peak of a profile on Billy Beane slated to run in this Sunday’s NYT Magazine.
- The New York Daily News gave it four out of five stars.
- The New York Post calls it the “best since Bull Durham“ (how many baseball movies have there been since Bull Durham? Maybe that’s the point.)
- Entrainment Weekly gave it an A-.
- Roger Ebert at the Chicago Sun Times: four stars.
- Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune calls it “The most unlikely great sports movie I’ve ever seen” in this video review.
- The San Jose Mercury News (in the Oakland market): “Brad Pitt hits a home run…” (These cutsey baseball terms are going to get old real fast.)
- And a favorable, if less effusive, report from NPR’s Morning Edition, featuring Mike Pesca, Rob Neyer, and Jonah Keri.
- The Washington Post adds their praise.
- The Boston Herald : “Brad Pitt knocks it out of the park…” Arggh.
- Boston Globe/Boston.com: “Moneyball is a winner.”
- The Los Angeles Times‘ Kenneth Turan offers another video review, calling it “entertaining and unusual” (even if he does misidentify Bill James as “Steve”.)
- The review from Variety came out two weeks ago (“uncannily sharp, penetrating”).
- Rotten Tomatoes gave Moneyball a 94. Scroll down for links to more reviews.
- Peter Travers of Rolling Stone “loved this movie,” even though he claims to hate baseball. (Warning: This video review just starts right up. Obnoxious that the embedding process doesn’t allow edits.)
